For many years in examining how the steel process affects a material´s machinability. A silicon-calcium injection in the steel melt modifies normally hard inclusions of aluminium oxide to soft oxides that produce minimal wear on the cutting tool edge and facilitates chip breaking. Moreover, a
non-metallic layer forms on the cutting edge that prevents atom transfer between edge and work piece. This gives a drastically reduced erosion on the cemented carbide tool surface, resulting in increased tool lifetime.
